Photography course mishaps/ Montreal

Amy & I at her bachelorette/birthday in Montreal over the weekend!

hey everyone!

sorry that it's taken me sooo long to write anything else on this thing, but i am back at home in canada now and on the old job hunt! things are going really well and i am excited about the next phase of life. i found a beautiful old house in toronto and i am taking a black and white film photography course... so i finally get some training on this whole taking pictures thing!

monday night was our first time in the dark room and it's a wonder that anything showed up at all on the negatives! for anyone who hasn't been in a dark room before, you essentially have to open the roll of film and load it onto a plastic spoll in the dark. after you put it into the light-safe canister, it's *supposed* to be smooth sailing...
there are no guarantees in life.
so after fighting the canister to open, i fumbled with the film. (thank god i didn't drop it on the ground!) i didn't realize it, but there was something wrong with the ballbearing that is supposed to grip and help you wind it... all i knew was that the thing stopped winding and the film was making a horrible crunching sounds... something was definately wrong!
thank god kevin, my lab partner, had an extra windy-thing. his calm "we'll get through this" attitude was definately a nice contrast to my "oh-my-god, i really like the pics on this roll and i think i'm messing it up hardcore" approach. so after some more fumbling we got the thing wound and in the canister.
so then came the developing... there is a very precise order to adding chemicals for processing... *ops* we messed that up a bit! things were put in the wrong order and as far as we were concerned, if the pics weren't already ruined, they would have been now! but thank goodness everything turned out okay (i think?!) and there are images on the negatives! next week we make our contact sheets and print some of the photos, so we'll see then!
[for those of you who might ever run into this issue, i'll tell you what we did. we put the stopper in before the developper... if this ever happens to you, just take out the stopper ASAP and flush it with water (68F) and then act as though nothing happened and keep the film in the developper for the recommended amount of time.]
